Classic Journeys is committed to responsible, sensitive tourism and to improving the welfare of the communities with whom we work. When we research new countries one of our priorities is to find an area of need within the local community. We believe we have a responsibility to the local people we employ and to the environment and wildlife in the areas we are travelling through. We have clear responsible tourism policies and our local ground operators share our commitment to responsible travel; we hope everyone wishing to visit wonderful places also adopts these responsibilities.
Committed to Caring for Our Local Staff
Classic Journeys continues to work with many of the local contacts we established in our early days. Small group travel is the centre of our philosophy enabling us to minimise the impact on local communities and the environment. Professional local guides lead most of our tours and we employ many local people, which benefits the wider local communities. Our clients also benefit from this practice as who better to show you their country than your professional local leader, who speaks the language and knows the culture intimately. Classic Journeys wholeheartedly supports the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG) who work to improve the conditions of the mountain porters in the tourism industry worldwide.
The International Porter Protection Group work to improve the conditions of the mountain porters in the tourism industry worldwide. Classic Journeys supports the International Porter Protection Group and are the first UK trekking company to make a commitment of donating on an annual basis All porters on a Classic Journeys Nepal trek are provided with insurance and adequate clothing (waterproofs, warm clothing, boots, goggles). To discover more about the IPPG and how you can help, check out the IPPG website.
Classic Journeys has an excellent safety record and we aim to maintain this. Not only are we concerned about our clients safety, but also our trekking crew and porters. There are many operators offering cut-price treks, but cheap trekking is at the cost of porters and trekking crew safety. We don’t believe this is worth it.
Our code of conduct regarding people: Ensure all guides, trekking crew and porters are provided with warm clothing, footwear, sunglasses, food and shelter
Ensure guides, trekking crew and porters are fairly paid and that porter loads are not excessive
Ensure that guides, trekking crew and porters are not put in dangerous situations
Ensure that insurance is provided for all guides, trekking crew and porters
Look after guides, trekking crew and porters’ health and to care for them when they are ill or injured
Respect local cultures. Encourage sensitivity when taking photographs, respect holy places, ask permission or use long lenses to get close-up shots and follow local customs
Learn a few key phases of your host’s language
Take time to get to know and understand your host when the opportunity arises
Encourage donations to a project, health centre or school rather than giving to beggars and local children
Respect local codes of conduct regarding dress. Encourage loose, lightweight clothes that cover shoulders and knees, especially if visiting any temples
Committed to caring for the environments we visit

The tourism industry exists due to the desire of people wanting to explore unique, challenging, beautiful or wild places. The environment is an essential part to our “product” and without it, many people would not wish to visit. We therefore have a vested interest, as well as a desire, to maintain the fantastic destinations we offer within our brochure. Our code of conduct ensures we have a positive influence on the environment.
To calculate and offset the carbon emmissions of your flight visit the Carbon Calculator on the Friends of Conservation website.
Our code of conduct regarding environments & wildlife:Respect the local environment and encourage visitors to respect it too
Ensure that kerosene or gas is used for cooking, not wood, on all our camping holidays
Discourage clients from having wood fuelled hot showers, instead encourage solar showers
Ensure the correct disposal of rubbish, burn, bury or pack it out. Leave campsites clean and rubbish free
Encourage visitors to carry away their own personal rubbish, sweet wrappers etc. Never drop litter
Use sparse resources such as water with care
Ensure the correct use of toilet tents, sited well away from drinking water and completely fill-in the hole on leaving camp. We believe not providing a toilet tent is an unacceptable practice and harmful to the environment
Leave plants to flourish in their natural environment, do not collect or take anything away with you, leave it in its natural setting for someone else to discover too
Never buy, collect or trade in wildlife products
Reduce, reuse and recycle
Ensure we offset the carbon produced by flights taken by Classic Journeys employees
Do not disturb wildlife, make as little noise as possible when in park areas or with wild animals
Adhere to rules and regulations inside protected areas
SUPPORTING LOCAL CONSERVATION - A HELPING HAND
Classic Journeys is dedicated to helping preserve the environment, cultures and wildlife of the Indian sub-continent. All of our wildlife and bird watching holidays actively support local conservation efforts through donations and sponsorship. Classic Journeys are members of TOFT (Tour Operators for Tigers), a UK travel industry campaign in cooperation with Global Tiger Patrol. TOFT aims to advocate and support a responsible and sustainable approach to tourism in Indian wildlife reserves, together with aiding specific conservation programmes, which benefit the local communities and wildlife.
We also support the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), an international campaigning organisation committed to investigating and exposing environmental crime. For example, EIA has highlighted Tiger poaching and the sale of Tiger skins to wealthy Chinese businessmen, tourists and for Tibetan ceremonial dress.
Classic Journeys is committed to working with agents and lodge owners who operate in an environmentally friendly way, who support Tiger conservation organisations and provide professional naturalist guides. Our choices of lodges offer space and a true feeling of wilderness whilst protecting these very special conservation areas.
Classic Journeys actively promotes and financially supports many conservation and humanitarian charities including the Himalayan Trust, the International Nepal Fellowship, United Mission to Nepal, International Porter Protection Group, Tour Operators for Tigers, Global Tiger Patrol and the Environmental Investigation Agency. We also have recommended charity projects, which you may like to contribute your time, energy, skills or money to. A visit to one of these projects could be added as part of an itinerary for individuals, groups or school trips.
