Mount Meru & Kilimanjaro's Rongai Route
A FANTASTIC COMBINATION OF MERU & KILIMANJARO
FASCINATING WILDLIFE IN ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK
THE QUIETEST ROUTE ON KILIMANJARO
CAMP AT MAWENZI TARN BENEATH THE STUNNING MAWENZI SPIRES
Although technically not a difficult climb, Mount Kilimanjaro (5895m) is a real challenge. We have chosen the quiet Rongai route and planned an ascent of Mount Meru (4566m), the second highest mountain in Tanzania and a fantastic climb in itself, as the perfect acclimatisation before attempting to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Our 4 day ascent of Mt. Meru starts in the beautiful Arusha National Park where we can expect to see Buffalo, Warthog, Zebra, Giraffe, Deer and many colourful birds. The route climbs through moorland to the horseshoe-shaped crater rim leading to the summit of Mt. Meru (4566m). The views are stunning with Kilimanjaro floating on the morning clouds above the surrounding plains. Having acclimatised we start our attempt of the mighty Mt. Kilimanjaro (5895m), gaining height gradually, passing through several different climate zones to the spectacularly situated Mawenzi Tarn (4330m) beneath towering rock spires. Starting out soon after midnight on the last day of the ascent, we should arrive on the crater rim in time to watch the sun rise over the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. Walking around the crater rim, passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs we finally arrive at Uhuru Peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa.
